چکیده

We report the detection and monitoring of transient substructures in the radiation-driven winds of five massive, hot stars in different evolutionary stages. Clumping in the winds of these stars shows up as variable, narrow subpeaks superposed on their wide, wind-broadened (optical) emission lines. Similar patterns of emission-line profile variations are detected in the Of stars ζ Puppis and HD93129A, in the more evolved hydrogen-rich, luminous, Of-like WN stars HD93131 and HD93162, and in the more mass-depleted WC star in γ2Velorum. These observations strongly suggest that stochastic wind clumping is a universal phenomenon in the radiationdriven, hot winds from all massive stars, with similar clumping factors in all stages of mass depletion. Subject headings: line:profiles – stars: emission-line, Be – stars: mass-loss – stars: winds, outflows – stars: Wolf-Rayet

A Clumping Independent Diagnostic of Stellar Mass-loss Rates: Rapid Clump Destruction in Adiabatic Colliding Winds

Clumping in hot star winds can significantly affect estimates of mass-loss rates, the inferred evolution of the star and the environmental impact of the wind. A hydrodynamical simulation of a colliding winds binary (CWB) with clumpy winds reveals that the clumps are rapidly destroyed after passing through the confining shocks of the wind-wind collision region (WCR) for reasonable parameters of ...

Radio observations of colliding winds in massive stars

This brief review describes radio observations of colliding winds in massive stars starting with the first direct observational support for the colliding-wind model advanced in the early 1990’s to explain non-thermal radio and thermal X-ray emission in some massive stars. Studies of the well-studied and highly-eccentric WR+O star systemWR140 are described along with recent observations of O-sta...

The influence of clumping on the infrared and radio continuum of early-type stars

Time-dependent hydrodynamical models predict that the stellar winds of early-type stars are clumped, due to the sweeping up of material into dense shells. In this paper we investigatewhether these shells can explain the longwavelength (≥ 10 μm) continuumfluxes of O and early B stars. We had previously found that, for some stars, smooth wind models failed to explain the infrared and millimetre fl...

Using polarization to study the winds of massive stars

The topic of wind-clumping has been the subject of much activity in recent years, due to the impact that it can have on derived mass-loss rates. Here we present an alternative method of investigating wind-clumping, that of polarimetry. We present simulations of the polarization produced by a clumpy wind, and argue that the observations may be reproduced just by statistical deviations from spher...

3 D models of radiatively driven colliding winds in massive O + O star binaries - II . Thermal radio to sub - mm emission

In this work the thermal emission over cm to sub-mm wavelengths from the winds in short-period O+O-star binaries is investigated (potential non-thermal emission is presently ignored). The calculations are based on three-dimensional hydrodynamical models which incorporate gravity, the driving of the winds, orbital motion of the stars, and radiative cooling of the shocked plasma. The thermal emis...
